Yoda Cave in Iceland – How to Visit Gígjagjá and Hjörleifshöfði.

Yoda Cave is a uniquely shaped geological formation and one of many attractions of southern Iceland.

It’s a cave with an opening shaped like the silhouette of the famous Star Wars movie character, Master Yoda, and because of that resemblance, it has gained popularity in recent years.

Let me tell you where to find this hidden gem, how to get there, and what else you can see and do in the area.

Where is Yoda cave?

As I mentioned above, Yoda Cave (properly called “Gígjagjá” in Icelandic, also known as the “Hjörleifshöfði Cave”) is located in South Iceland. It is carved inside Mount Hjörleifshöfði – a huge rock formed due to a volcanic eruption.

It’s very close to Iceland’s southernmost village, Vik and the famous Reynisfjara Beach.

It’s about a 3-hour (200 km) drive from Reykjavik and a 20-minute (16 km) drive from Vik.

Note: if you’re driving from Reykjavík, you’ll drive through Vik before reaching the cave.

I’ve seen Yoda Cave’s Icelandic name is spelled both as “Gýgagjá” and “Gígjagjá”, however the info sign right in cave calls it “Gígjagjá”.

Google Maps also uses the “Gígjagjá” spelling.

How to get to Yoda Cave

The easiest and best way to reach this hidden gem is by car. I wasn’t able to find any tours that included the Yoda Cave as a stop in their itineraries and haven’t seen a single tour bus when I visited.

The cave is easily accessible from the main road and the drive is very pleasant. It starts off on a paved road that turns into gravel later, but despite it being a little bumpy, it is doable in any car.

Yoda Cave parking

As you make your way to the top of Hjörleifshöfði Mountain you’ll see a sign announcing that you are entering the Viking Park. It is privately owned land, and you have to pay a parking fee.

There are two parking areas that you’ll see as you drive on the gravel road.

The first one is for the Hjörleifshöfði trailhead (more on the trail later in the post) and the second one for the Yoda Cave.

You pay just one fee for both lots for the day and it’s determined by the kind of vehicle you’re driving. The regular car parking cost in 2024 was 1000 ISK. Use the EasyPark app or the QR code from the info sign in front of the cave entrance.

Visit the Viking Park website for a detailed map of Hjörleifshöfði cape and the surrounding area.

About Yoda Cave

As I mentioned earlier, the biggest claim to fame of this cave is the resemblance of its entrance to the Star Wars character, Master Yoda.

You can see it from the outside, but you can experience the full effect better looking at it from the inside of the cave. The opening really looks just like Yoda!

It offers some fun photo opportunities.

You can also walk around the area and check out the amazing views of the coast, the black sand beaches (Mýrdalssandur) and Mýrdalsjökull glacier.

There were even some picnic tables near the cave, which made it a perfect place for a lunch or snack break.

But it’s not only the unique shape of the cave’s opening that lures the tourists to this natural wonder.

Yoda Cave and the Hjörleifshöfði promontory were also a filming location of the “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” movie released in 2016. They were featured in the movie’s opening scene.

After your visit to the Yoda Cave, you can go for a hike to the top of the Hjörleifshöfði Mountain.

About the Hjörleifshöfði trail

As you drive down the gravel road from the cave, you’ll see the parking area for the Hjörleifshöfði trailhead on your right (you passed it on your left while driving up).

It’s a 2-mile loop trail leading to the historical burial mound of one of the first settlers of Iceland, a Viking named Hjörleifur Hróðmarsson, for which Hjörleifshöfði is named.

He was a brother of Ingólfur Arnarsson, whose memorial you’ll find at the Ingólfshöfði Cape.

The trail also offers breathtaking views from the summit.

It usually takes about 2-3 hours to complete the loop.

I did not have the time to hike there – I was a tour guide for my dad on his first trip to Iceland and there was so much I needed to show him on the South Coast! Plus, the day was incredibly windy, so not the best for a hike.

But I added the Hjörleifshöfði hike to my “to do in Iceland” list that just keeps on growing!

Best time to visit Yoda Cave

Yoda Cave is open to tourists year-round, but if you’re planning to visit in the winter months, make sure to check the most up-to-date weather forecast and road conditions. Please ensure that the gravel road leading to the cave is passable.

Is the Yoda Cave Worth Visiting?

In my opinion, absolutely yes! Especially if the weather cooperates and you have a clear day to admire the stunning landscapes and take some fun pictures. If you can add the hike to your itinerary, this unique cave makes a really nice Ring Road adventure stop.
