What is Friðheimar Tomato and Horse Farm?
It’s Iceland’s most unique tomato farm! It’s a family business, primarily focused on growing different varieties of tomato plants year-round, using eco-friendly natural resources, like geothermal energy to heat the greenhouses, clean glacial water for irrigation, and natural biological pest controls (pest-eating bugs!).
The current owners also breed Icelandic horses and organize their own horse shows, as well as barn visits for groups.

Where is Friðheimar Tomato Farm?
Friðheimar is located on rt. 35 in Reykholt, South Iceland, very close to the Golden Circle route

It’s about 35 minutes (46 km) from Thingvellir (Þingvellir) National Park and only 15 minutes (19 km) from Geysir Geothermal Area.
It’s a quick, easy detour from the main three stops of the Golden Circle and a fantastic place for a lunch break.
How to get to Friðheimar?
By car:
The easiest way to get to Friðheimar Tomato Farm is by car. It’s an easy drive on rt. 35 and the turn to the farm is very well marked by a big sign by the road.

With a guided tour:
If you don’t have a car available, that’s no problem at all! There are plenty of full day tours from Reykjavik that include a visit to the farm in their Golden Circle itinerary.
Here is a list of the ones I recommend:
- Golden Circle, Kerid, and Horse Farm Minibus Tour
- Golden Circle & Secret Lagoon Day Trip with Lunch at Friðheimar
- Golden Circle, Friðheimar, & Sky Lagoon Tour
- Golden Circle, Silfra Snorkeling, and Farm Lunch
Do I need to reserve a table in advance?
Yes, you absolutely do if you want to have the unforgettable experience of a sit-down meal in their unique tomato greenhouse. The tables get booked quickly, especially for the summer months and for large groups.
You can book online here.
If you join a Golden Circle tour, the tour operator will take care of the reservation for you.
The Friðheimar greenhouse is open for lunch from 11:30 am till 4 pm.
What if I don’t have a reservation?
That’s no problem either! While you won’t get the full experience of eating amongst tomato vines, you can still taste the mouth-watering food Friðheimar offers at the newly opened Friðheimar Wine Bar (Vinstofa).

The Wine Bar is very nice and modern, but still has a lot of charm. It’s located on the Friðheimar Farm property, adapted from one of their oldest greenhouses.

It offers light meals, including the farm’s famous tomato soup with fresh baked bread, but also choices of wine and other drinks. You can even try tomato beer!
It is also meant as a meeting spot, event venue (like concerts, shows, book clubs) and a workspace. Who wouldn’t want to get some work done inside a tomato-themed restaurant?

They are open daily from 1 pm till 10 pm, with their kitchen closing at 8 pm.
Best time of year to visit Friðheimar
Friðheimar is open year-round as it is easily accessible even in the winter months.
Using artificial lighting and Iceland’s natural resources like geothermal heat allows the farm to keep the greenhouse open all year, both for growing tomatoes and providing their special food experience for visitors.
Do I have to dress up to dine at Friðheimar Farm?
Absolutely not! When we were there, we saw people dressed in hiking gear, as well as in casual jeans and sweaters. This is a place for you to enjoy a wonderful meal in a unique space, in a relaxed atmosphere. Everyone here understands that this is Iceland, and you may have just finished a hike right before coming so no special attire is required.
Our experience at Friðheimar
We arrived in the middle of lunch service time, so the parking lot was full, but after a bit of circling we managed to get a spot. We were a little early and we had time to wander around the property, taking everything in.
Finally, it was time for us to be seated. The Friðheimar staff was extremely nice and explained how everything works as they led us to our table, marked with an adorable chalkboard plaque with our name on it.

We ordered the famous tomato soup which came with unlimited freshly baked bread, butter, and cucumber salsa. The soup and the bread were on separate tables, to which you just walked up and served yourself, with unlimited refills.

Each table also had a pot with a basil plant and small scissors attached to it so that you could cut fresh basil leaves to add to your food. What a clever idea and a wonderful touch!

Our server was super helpful and accommodating, going as far as modifying the order for our daughter changing one of the ingredients in a dish. The whole experience was incredible.
We were quite full after the main course, but still ordered a couple of desserts, just to taste them. We simply couldn’t resist tasing green tomatoes and apple pie or a cheesecake with green tomato jam… Of course, they were sooo good!
AND – served in the cutest flowerpots!

The tea, coffee, and hot chocolate are made at the bar near the main dining area, and are included with the meals, which was a nice surprise.
After we paid and left our table, we wandered around the greenhouse, exploring. There were some informational boards near the entrance, explaining operations of the farm and tomato growing process.

There was even a demo beehive for everyone to look at!
On the way out we stopped at “The Little Tomato Shop” where you can buy all kinds of tomato-themed, delicious food souvenirs, like jams, sauces, soup – even tomato ice cream!

Where to stay near Friðheimar?
The closest hotels to Friðheimar are located in the Reykholt/Flúðir area. Laugarvatn is also very close, and Selfoss (about 35 minutes away) has a lot of great accommodation choices as well.
I stayed in B&G Apartments in Selfoss, and in Miðdalskot Cottages in Laugarvatn, and loved both places.
Nearby attractions:
The closest main attraction is of course the Golden Circle route, and this unique greenhouse restaurant make a perfect place to take a break from sightseeing.
This is also an area rich in geothermal activity, so you have a choice of a few hot springs to relax after your meal – my personal favorite Secret Lagoon (one of the oldest hot pools in Iceland), Laugarvatn Fontana Baths and Hrunalaug (or Hruni) natural hot springs, all within 10-25 minutes from Friðheimar.
The area of Flúðir and Reykholt is also a great starting point for a trip to some easily accessible places in the Icelandic Highlands, like Landmannalaugar, or driving the epic road F35 to the amazing area of Kerlingarfjöll.
If you’re up for a short but beautiful hike in the area, Reykjadalur Valley is only 45 minutes away.
