The Trail of the Headlands: Guide to Hiking the Algarve’s Hidden Gem.

If you’re looking for a scenic hike in the Algarve without the crowds, I’ve got a perfect trail for you: the Trail of the Headlands (Caminho dos Promontórios).

This coastal hike runs from Carvoeiro to Ferragudo and rewards you with some striking scenery and amazing views of the Algarve’s golden cliffs and turquoise ocean waters. And while the scenery rivals that found along its famous competitor, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, you get to enjoy it without much company!

I’ve recently hiked it with my family, and we had the path pretty much to ourselves. We only saw a few other hikers along the way, which was so nice!

Let me walk through everything you need to know to plan this hike, including how to find the trailhead, which is NOT that obvious!

What is the Trail of the Headlands?

As I mentioned, the Trail of the Headlands is the lesser-known of the two hiking trails along the coastline of the Carvoeiro/Lagoa region of the Algarve (the famous one being the Seven Hanging Valleys trail).

It’s a 6 km out-and-back route, following the rugged coast on top of the cliffs.

It officially starts at Praia do Paraíso in Carvoeiro and ends at Praia do Molhe in Ferragudo; however, it’s possible to walk it in both directions.

You can also walk just a portion of it, starting from either of the endpoints or trail access points at Ponta do Altar and at Caneiros Beach (Praia dos Caneiros) located closer to the Ferragudo end of the trail.

Helpful tip: this trail is also known as the “Trail of Headlands” or simply as “Headlands Trail”.

Is the trail difficult?

I’d rate it as easy to moderate, as it is mostly easy to walk, but has a few mild uphill sections and a couple of wooden fences to climb (more on that later in this article)

How to get to the trailhead?

The Trail of the Headlands starts from the Praia do Paraíso parking lot, where you can leave your car if you drive here.

Helpful hint: you can also walk to the trailhead from Carvoeiro Beach – read below about how we did it!

You can see the Praia do Paraíso beach below and the white stairs leading to it on the left side (if you’re standing facing the ocean).

On your right, you’ll notice a small restaurant, Mar d’Fora.

Head over towards the restaurant, and next to it, you’ll see a wooden fence and a narrow dirt path – that’s the start of this trail!

You’ll see an info sign right by the entry to the parking lot, so it’s nearly impossible to miss this area. The sign has a map of the trail and some trail information, like the beaches you’ll pass on the way, but also distances and elevation gain.

Is the trail well-marked?

The trail is pretty well marked, initially just with the wooden posts and later with posts painted with yellow and red stripes.

It’s easy to follow – the path guides you quite well, there were only a couple of spots where we had to stop and look for a marker.

How long does it take to hike the trail?

Just like with the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, I’ll tell you what I’ve read it’s supposed to take and what It does take in reality.

Every guide I looked at gave an estimate of about 2-3 hours to hike one way.

We only walked just over an hour, and I don’t believe we got even close to the halfway point.

We stopped often to take in the views (and there are some incredible views!) and to take photos so it was a slower pace for us. Take that into consideration when planning your day.

Our experience on the Trail of the Headlands:

We hiked this trail during our first trip to Portugal, and having planned only a couple of days in the Algarve (now we know better!), we packed them with things to do.

That day we had already kayaked to the iconic Benagil Cave early in the morning and explored Agar Seco.

We then walked the Carvoeiro Boardwalk to Carvoeiro Beach and had lunch nearby. That’s when we found out that Praia do Paraíso is only a 10-minute walk away, so we decided to just leave our car at the Algar Seco parking lot and continue walking.

It was a great choice, as the walk was very pleasant, although slightly uphill.

We walked along the coast, past some pretty tiles and decorative staircases in the nooks of some narrow side streets.

We finally made it to the Mar d’Fora restaurant and found the trailhead.

We followed the path and started our hike.

The first thing that we noticed was how empty and quiet it was, compared to the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail we just walked the day before! We had it pretty much to ourselves, only seeing a few other hikers the entire time we walked.

I’d call this trail a little more rugged than its famous “competitor”, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail. It’s not as well-maintained, the path got quite overgrown in a few spots, and we had to squeeze past some shrubs.

But mostly the trail followed the coast and offered some truly amazing views.

At times you see the warning signs about unstable cliffs, so just make sure you stay on the path and don’t get close to the edge of the cliffs – there are no barriers there.

You’ll have some uphill/downhill sections, and you’ll have to climb over some fences to continue hiking, but that only adds to the fun and adventure.

We really liked this hike, and its quiet rugged beauty, but this was day 2 of our pretty intense Algarve itinerary and we simply started feeling tired…

So after about an hour of walking we decided to start heading back, especially that we still had to make our way on foot to our car parked by Algar Seco.

And we planned to explore the cliffs along the Carvoeiro Boardwalk that we saw on our way to the trailhead, so we had to save some energy for that!

Bonus tip: Don’t miss the Carvoeiro Boardwalk cliffs – they are amazing!

Best time for hiking the trail

This trail does not get nearly as busy as the famous Seven Hanging Valleys Trail, so you don’t have to time your hike with the goal of avoiding the crowds in mind.

However, I’d recommend avoiding the summer months due to hot temperatures, if possible.

It’s also not a good idea to hike this trail on a very windy day as it’s pretty exposed without much shelter from the elements, and in )or right after) the rain as the path may get muddy and slippery.

Is hiking the Trail of the Headlands worth it?

Yes! You should definitely give this hike a try, even if like us, you’ll just walk a portion of it.

It’s less touristy, less crowded, and offers truly breathtaking views of steep limestone cliffs and pristine secluded beaches, rivaling those of other, more popular Algarve trails.

What to bring on the trail

There are no stores or cafes along this hike so you should bring plenty of water and snacks – enough to keep you hydrated and full for the entire hiking time.

Bring sunscreen and bug spray – the latter one more “just in case” as we weren’t bothered by insects, but it’s always good to have.

Hiking shoes or sneakers that have sturdy soles with good grip – the terrain is uneven and sometimes a little rocky, so good footwear is important.

And don’t forget your camera to capture those spectacular views!

 FAQ:

How long is the Trail of the Headlands?

The full trail is approximately 6 km (about 3.7 miles) long one way, stretching from Praia do Paraíso in Carvoeiro to Praia do Molhe in Ferragudo. You can hike it in either direction or just a portion of it.

Is the trail family-friendly?

Yes, BUT with caution. Children who are used to walking or hiking will enjoy it, but due to cliffside paths without guardrails, it’s best for families with older kids who will understand the need for being careful and are comfortable with uneven terrain.

How much time should I plan for the hike?

Plan for 2–3 hours if you’re hiking one way, but more if you stop often for photos or take breaks. If you’re doing a round trip or only hiking part of it, adjust accordingly.

Are there any facilities along the trail?

No, there are no cafes, restrooms, or stores directly on the trail. Be sure to bring water, snacks, and sunscreen, especially in the summer.

Do I need special hiking gear?

You don’t need full hiking gear, but comfortable, sturdy shoes with a good grip are essential. Hiking poles may be useful, although not absolutely necessary. Definitely bring a camera — you’ll want to capture those views!
