Why Visiting Algar Seco Should Be on Your Portugal Itinerary (and How to Plan Your Visit).

Visiting the Algarve for the first time? Make sure Algar Seco is on your list!

This stunning stretch of coastline was one of my favorite finds in Southern Portugal.

It is easy to reach, a lot of fun to explore, and full of the kind of views you came to Portugal for, like dramatic cliffs, clear blue sea, and unique limestone rock formations that look like something out of a movie.

Whether you have an hour or an afternoon, it’s a perfect spot to experience the beauty of the Algarve!

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know, including tips on how to get to Algar Seco, the best time to visit, and what not to miss – especially how to find the famous A Boneca Cave entrance!

What is Algar Seco?

A tunnel in a limestone rocky cliff at Algar Seco in the Algarve, Portugal.

Algar Seco is a series of unique rock formations on the Algarve coast, along the limestone cliffs of Carvoeiro. There are tunnels, grottos, and other small terraces, all formed as a result of erosion by ocean water, rain, and winds.

The most famous structure of Algar Seco is the iconic A Boneca Cave (“The Doll”) – a cavern with two hollowed-out rock windows resembling the eyes of a doll.

It’s a famous spot, but not the easiest to find, so read below to find out where it is!

How to get to Algar Seco?

By car:

Like I mentioned earlier, Algar Seco is located in Carvoeiro. The easiest way to get there is to drive.

We arrived from Benagil Beach after our early morning Benagil Cave kayaking tour, and it was about a 10-minute drive.

If you’re staying in Albufeira or Lagos, it’s a 35-40 minute drive from either town. It’s only a 22-minute drive from Portimão.

If you’re staying in Carvoeiro, you can take a 3-minute drive or just walk from the beach to the Carvoeiro Boardwalk and just follow the wooden walkway.

Algar Seco parking:

There is a FREE parking lot near the main part, where you’ll find A Boneca Cave and the Boneca Bar.

Helpful hint: If you type in “Algar Seco” in your Google Maps, it will automatically insert the street, called “Estrada do Algar Seco” and it should get you to the right place. If you’re having trouble, just put in “Boneca Bar”.

There is also a parking area in Carvoeiro, at the other end of the nearby Carvoeiro Boardwalk, near the Nossa Senhora da Encarnação fort.

By bus:

There is a bus (#107) from Portimão, but it only runs a few times per day, so check the schedule carefully.

With a tour:

You can also take a tour, in which exploring Algar Seco rock formations is included in the itinerary.

These tours usually combine Algar Seco with other area attractions, like the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail and a visit to the famous Benagil Cave.

What to do at Algar Seco?

Explore the cliffs

There is so much to see!

When you arrive, just go down the stairs and walk around, taking in the incredible views.

We came right after our sunrise Benagil Cave kayaking tour, so we had no issues finding a parking spot, and the crowds haven’t descended on the area yet.

We were able to explore the tunnels and grottos to our heart’s desire!

If you go to the left of the stairs (when standing facing the ocean), you’ll have a large area of the cliffs to explore – peek into the small caves, climb the stone stairs and check out the various Algar Seco rocks.

There was even a little rock pool where you could swim at high tide.

You may see some boats passing by or some daredevils jumping into the ocean – Algar Seco is a very popular Algarve cliff jumping spot.

If you go to the right of the stairs, you’ll find the way to the iconic “A Boneca Cave”

Find the famous “A Boneca Cave”

It took us some time to find it, as there are no signs pointing you in the right direction. We almost gave up, but after asking friendly staff members from the “Boneca Bar” we found it!

So, to save you from the search, here is how to get to “The Doll Cave”:

Go down the stairs towards the Boneca Bar – you can’t miss it. It’s the place with a large tan canopy you see from the top.

Go through the bar and on your right, if you look very closely, you’ll see a very worn “sign” for the cave – just the words “A Boneca” written in black letters.

It’s much easier to spot when you know what you’re looking for!

Step into the short tunnel, and after a short walk, you’ll find yourself inside the cave, with the two “eyes” looking out into the ocean.

Have lunch at Boneca Bar

Boneca Bar is considered by some as “a place with the best views in the Algarve”.

It is open every day except Sundays, from 11:30 am till 11:00 pm.

The menu has something for everyone, from seafood and burgers to soups and vegan dishes.

We came before it opened, so we weren’t able to eat there, but having a meal in this amazing coastal scenery has to be good!

Continue to the Carvoeiro Boardwalk for more Algar Seco exploring!

Want more tunnels and grottos to wander through? Just go back up the stairs towards the parking lot and take a left to follow a wooden walkway, called the Carvoeiro Boardwalk.

You’ll get more amazing coastal scenery, and about halfway through your walk, you’ll come to the staircase leading to the base of the limestone cliffs.

That’s where you can continue your Algar Seco adventure.

Best time to visit Algar Seco

Algar Seco is open all year, 24/7 and is free to enter.

Because of the uneven terrain and the lack of any barriers, it’s not the best idea to go there in the rain (rocks may get slippery) and in the dark (you may lose your path).

I recommend arriving early in the day, like we did, or later in the evening to beat the crowds and easily find a parking spot, especially if you’re visiting in the summer months.

Is Algar Seco worth it?

Absolutely! It has rock formations and scenery that make you feel like you’re on another planet! Make sure to put Algar Seco on your Portugal itinerary – it’s one of the most unique spots in the Algarve!

How much time do you need at Algar Seco?

You can spend as much or as little time as you want there, but I’d allow at least one hour to explore the Algar Seco rocks.

If you plan to eat at Boneca Bar, add time for that.

Where to stay near Algar Seco?

Well, there is Algar Seco Parque – a hotel complex with apartments, villas, a restaurant, and swimming pools, located directly above the Algar Seco rocks. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to THAT view?

Other convenient places to stay can be found in Carvoeiro, Lagoa, Portimão or Albufeira.
