What are e-cars?
They are small, 2-person electric vehicles. The ones available to rent in Sintra are Renault Twizy cars. They fit two people, and the passenger sits behind the driver.

Our experience with driving e-cars in Sintra:
We chose this option as, by nature, we are “do it yourself” travelers and like our independence while visiting places. So after much research, we decided that e-cars will give us just that plus we’ll try something we’ve never done before.
So we arrived in Sintra and picked up our Twizys in the little store across from the train station.

I was sharing a car with our son and my husband was driving with our daughter.
We got basic instructions on how to operate the cars, got our route sent to our phones via WhatsApp, gathered the power banks, all the cords, our belongings and off we went to the Pena Palace.
The drive was exciting, up some winding narrow roads but a lot of fun.
Watch a quick video to get an idea of what it looks like:
Pena Palace was stunning, and while we didn’t wait in the long line to see the interior of the palace, we explored every nook and cranny of the terraces outside.

We decided to leave the cars in the Pena parking lot and walk to the Moorish Castle through the gardens of Pena.

The castle is completely different from Pena Palace but equally beautiful. We walked the stone walls of the fortress and admired breathtaking views of the area.
Our tour operator was checking in with us periodically to make sure we were ok.
To save time we took a jeep ride down to the parking lot where we left the cars and drove to the garage to have the cars charged while we had lunch.
I will admit – that was the only wrinkle in our plan as the process took a lot longer than advertised in the tour description and forced us to take a much longer break than we’re used to.
We had a choice of what to see on our route when we were booking the cars and we chose to do Quinta da Regaleira and Cabo da Roca after lunch.

We got inside our newly recharged cars and drove to Quinta da Regaleira.
What a beautiful place! The palace, the gardens, the waterfalls and the little towers everywhere were simply magical.

It was now early afternoon, and we started our drive to Cabo da Roca – the westernmost point of Portugal and Europe.
We drive through the woods of the park and then up the coastal winding open roads. That’s when we felt the lack of windows in the cars – we were going higher and higher and it was getting colder and windier by the minute!
The wind was strong when we arrived and cloudy skies made us feel even colder so we quite quickly walked around the area, checked out the sign announcing that we were at the western tip of the continent and explored the coastal cliffs.

Then we went inside the little café for a hot drink, a snack and to warm up a little before our drive back to Sintra.
On the way back we passed the entrance to Monserrate Palace but we were due to return the cars (slightly late actually!) so we didn’t stop.
We returned the cars and spent some more time in the area by the train station, got some souvenirs and boarded our train back to Lisbon.
So how would I rate the experience with e-cars in Sintra?
Definitely as a positive one – we had a good time and got a taste of driving in Sintra!
Here is my list of pros and cons of the experience:
Pros:
- Freedom to explore Sintra at your own pace
- Independence from bus schedules and ride share apps
- Access to parking lots by major attractions like Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle
- Easy to park in very tight spots
- An eco-friendly adventure and a unique, fun experience
- You get audio guides to learn about the places you’re visiting
- You can visit Cabo da Roca or the coast without having to take the bus (driving the e-car was much faster)
Cons:
- Cars are small, especially tight for the passenger in the back
- Our Twizys had no windows beside the windshield, so it was cold driving to Cabo da Roca
- Limited range – they needed to be charged halfway through the day which forced us to take a much longer lunch that we would have wanted
- You’re limited by pick up and drop off times. Our pick up was late and we would have liked to return the cars an hour later to see Monserrate Palace (we came back a year later and did see it – stunning!)
- Cost per car is more than bus tickets and can add up to more than Uber/Bolt rides around Sintra.
With all that being said, I’m very happy we did it, it was definitely an exciting day!
My advice:
- Discuss the pick-up and drop-off times with the tour operator to make sure you have enough time for everything you want to see.
- Get a good estimate of charging time so that you know how long of a break you’ll have in your day

Good to know: the experience is called “a tour” because at the time of booking your cars you need to choose which attractions you want to visit so the company can program your routes in the GPS you’ll get with the car.

FAQ:
No, no special documents are required. A standard valid driver’s license is enough. Make sure to bring it with you to pick up the car. Some companies may also require a passport.
Most e-cars can last around 40–50 km on a full charge, depending on driving conditions. However, expect to recharge halfway through a full sightseeing day. Ask your rental company for an estimate of the charging time.
The rental company usually provides support in case of emergencies. They also check in with you periodically to make sure you’re ok and can assist if needed, but it’s best to stick to the planned routes and recharge when advised.
Some roads are narrow, winding, and a bit steep but manageable with caution and low speeds. Nothing scary or dangerous, just part of the adventure! Beginners should take it slow, especially around sharp bends.
Since many e-cars don’t have side windows, bring a jacket or windbreaker, even in warmer months. A small backpack for essentials (charger cables, water, snacks) is a good idea too.
