About Paiva Walkways
Paiva walkways is an 8.7 km wooden boardwalk trail along the bank of the Paiva River.
It’s located in Arouca Geopark (a UNESCO Geological Site) and stretches between two small towns: Areinho and Espiunca, both about an hour drive from Porto.
How to get to Paiva Walkways from Porto
You have two ways to get to the trail – either drive or take a guided tour.
There is no public transportation option to get to Passadiços do Paiva.
Drive
If you have a rental car, you can drive and park in either town. For the exact locations of the parking lots, check the official website for the Walkways.
Please note: the parking lots are free and unguarded, so don’t leave any valuables in the car.
Which parking lot should you choose? It depends on which direction you’ll hike the trail – more on that below.
Be aware that getting to the Areinho access point does involve driving on some winding narrow mountain roads.

Book a Paiva Walkways tour
Booking a tour is a great option, especially if you don’t have a rental car – we stayed in Porto and didn’t have one, so we chose this guided tour and had an amazing time.
If, for some reason, this tour doesn’t work with your itinerary, here are other, highly rated options:
As you can see, most tours also include the 516 Arouca Suspension Bridge, which is the bonus addition to your day I mentioned at the beginning of this article.
I wasn’t sure I’d be able to cross it, but I was SO happy I did it. You can read all about my suspension bridge experience in this guide, but please note that crossing the Arouca bridge is totally optional, even if you book a tour that includes it on the itinerary.
There is one advantage to crossing the bridge before hiking Paiva Walkways – more on that a little further in this post.
Which way should I hike Passadiços do Paiva?
You can walk this trail in either direction or even do a round-trip hike back and forth.

The hike from Areinho to Espiunca has one part that may be difficult for some – a wooden staircase of about 390 steps (according to our tour guide) – but afterwards the trail runs mostly flat or downhill.
The hike from Espiunca to Areinho will have you climb the staircase leading up to the Arouca bridge (415 stairs) towards the end of your hike, and then you’ll go down from there.
Can you avoid climbing the stairs when hiking the Paiva Walkways?
Yes! You can avoid climbing the stairs if:
- you cross the 516 Arouca Bridge from the Alvarenga side
and
- you hike the Paiva Walkways one way towards Espiunca
You just take a left turn from the bridge, then follow the path to the staircase.
That’s what we did and had a great day walking along the boardwalk. The only staircase we took was going down from the bridge.

Can I hike a portion of the Paiva Walkways?
Yes – you can hike the Walkways either from Areinho or Espiunca to Vau.
Vau is the halfway point where you’ll find a small beach, a café and restrooms, and a sign with information on how to call a taxi to get picked up. You can also book an Uber or Bolt.

Do you need tickets to hike the Paiva Walkways?
Yes, you need to buy a ticket online before hiking the trail.
They are not timed and valid for the entire day, within opening hours. They cost €2.
There is a limited number of tickets for sale at the entrance daily, payable in cash, but there is no guarantee.
Please note: your Paiva Walkways ticket DOES NOT include access to 516 Arouca Bridge, however, your bridge crossing ticket DOES give you access to the Walkways if you hike the trail on the same day as you cross the bridge.
How do I get back to my car?
You have three options:
- Hike the trail both ways
- Hike one way and grab a taxi or an Uber/Bolt ride back to your car
- Take a taxi/Uber from the parking lot to the other access point and hike back to your car.
How long does it take to hike Paiva Walkways?
It took us 2.5 hours to hike from the Arouca Bridge to Espiunca at a very relaxed pace, taking a lot of photos and making a stop in Vau to meet up with our guide and tour companions.
So I’d allow 2-3 hours for a one-way hike and 4-6 hours for a round trip.
Services along the trail
The only spot with restrooms and food/drink is at the halfway point in Vau, however the small restaurant is seasonal and was closed when we visited in April.
So I recommend bringing your own snacks and drinks.
There are orange emergency phones should you need help during your hike if you don’t have good cell phone reception.

Helpful hint: to make sure you stay connected during your trip, purchase an eSIM from Airalo, Saily or Sim Local for easy and affordable access to messaging, data, and an optional calling feature.
Our experience hiking the Paiva Walkways
We hiked the trail as part of our Arouca Bridge and Paiva Walkways Tour.
After crossing the bridge (amazing experience!), we took a left turn and followed the path towards the staircase, leading down towards the river (that’s the 415 steps).

It was a great, relatively easy hike along the wooden boardwalk, with beautiful views and the river on our right side.

When we got to Vau we met up with our guide (who dropped the car off in Espiunca and walked back to us) and another couple from our tour who didn’t cross the bridge but hiked the trail from Areinho.

There is another small suspension bridge over the river and we had some unexpected guests on it – a couple of shepherd dogs resting right in the middle!

And then we saw a farmer walking a herd of goats on the opposite riverbank – it was really cool to see!

Then we continued walking, with our guide giving us a ton of information about the history and geology of the area and showing us cork and eucalyptus trees and other plants.

We stopped at Salto Gola to see the famous Paiva rapids, making the river a prime spot for level 5 rafting and kayaking.

We ended our hike in Espiunca, with a fantastic meal at the “Requinte do Paiva” Restaurant. It was just what we needed after a long day of walking.
There was also a small dirt parking lot near the restaurant, with a few jeeps and taxis waiting to pick up the hikers from the trail.
Then our guide drove us back to Porto and dropped us off at our apartment.
Practical tips for hiking Passadiços do Paiva
- Wear comfortable clothing and walking shoes with a good grip – the trail can get slippery when wet
- Bring food and drinks – the restaurant in Vau is not always open
- Bring a hat and sunscreen on sunny days
- Bring a plastic bag to store your trash – the only trash bins are at entry points and in Vau
- Bring a small backpack to carry some extra layers (like a raincoat/windbreaker) – the weather here can change suddenly
- Bring a small first aid kit just in case
- Don’t forget your camera to capture the views!
- Give yourself enough time to enjoy this stunning nature walk!
Best time to hike Paiva Walkways
The trail is open year-round, however it may get extremely hot in the summer so if you visit between May and August, try to walk early in the morning or later in the evening.
Always check the opening hours.
I’d also avoid it in the rain as the wooden boardwalk can get very slippery.
Where to stay near the Paiva Walkways
Paiva Walkways make a great day trip from Porto, especially if you combine it with visiting the Arouca Suspension Bridge.
That’s where we stayed and it was very convenient. We had an apartment on Rua de Santa Catarina that we loved for its comfort and convenient location, but there are many great accommodation options in Porto.
If you’d like to stay closer to Geopark, you can book a hotel in Arouca, which will put you within a half-hour drive from either entry point for the trail.
Check the handy map below for Arouca hotel choices:
FAQ:
Unfortunately, the Paiva Walkways are not handicap accessible. The trail includes many stairs and uneven wooden boardwalks along steep terrain, which can be challenging for those with mobility issues.
Yes – Paiva Walkways are generally family friendly for children who can handle a moderate hike. The trail is well maintained, with railings and scenic resting points. Just keep in mind that it’s about 8.7 km (5.4 miles) one way, so bringing water, snacks, and sun protection is key.
Please keep in mind that strollers are not allowed.
Both options work well, but it depends on your travel style. Visiting on your own gives you the freedom to hike at your own pace. Joining a guided tour, however, can be a great option if you want easy transportation from Porto, local insights, and a hassle-free experience.
No, you don’t, even if you book a tour that includes it in the itinerary. You can just hike the Walkways. Crossing the bridge from the Alvarenga side does help avoid climbing the steep staircase in Areinho!
To protect the environment and keep the trail safe, a few items and activities are not permitted:
– Dogs and other pets (except guide dogs)
– Bicycles or scooters
– Strollers
– Smoking or lighting fires
– Loud music
– Drones without prior authorization
– Littering (bins are available at several points along the trail)
Hiking the Paiva Walkways is one of many great day trips you can take from Porto – a perfect blend of nature, adventure, and breathtaking scenery.
This trail offers a glimpse into Portugal’s natural beauty and can be a fantastic break from sightseeing in the city.
