Vogel Cable Car, Slovenia: 7 Reasons to Ride It (+ Why It’s Worth It).

If you’re anywhere near Lake Bohinj in Slovenia and wondering how to get those epic Alpine views without a long, exhausting hike, let me point you straight to the Vogel cable car.

Honestly, this was one of those experiences that surprised me in the best way.

In just a few minutes, the cable car whisks you from the peaceful lakeside up into the Julian Alps, where breathtaking views await, along with plenty of mountain trails to explore, scenic spots to relax and so much more!

So let me tell you exactly what to expect when riding the Vogel cable car, what to do once you’re at the top, and give you a few tips from my visit to help you make the most of it.

About Vogel cable car

Vogel cable car is a panoramic gondola in the Lake Bohinj area, connecting the lakeside village of Ukanc to the Vogel Ski Area.

It takes you 1000 meters above Lake Bohinj to the Vogel Viewpoint on Rjava skala (Brown Rock), at an altitude of 1535 meters.

The first passenger cable car to Vogel started operating in 1964, and the original gondola was replaced by the current modern one in 2001.

Take the bus

You can take a local bus from Ribčev Laz to Ukanc, get off near the campsite and walk up the driveway to the cable car station.

By boat

You can also take the panoramic boat from the dock near the Bohinj Bridge in Ribčev Laz to the campsite in Ukanc and walk a few minutes to the cable car station.

Walk

Or you can just walk along the lake path and take a left at the campsite entrance to the Vogel station.

That’s what we did and while not the speediest way to get there, it’s a really nice walk if you have the time.

Opening times and tickets

Vogel cable car operates year-round as the area turns from a scenic viewpoint in the spring, summer, and fall into a very active ski resort in the winter.

It’s typically open from 8:00 am till 6:00 pm and runs every 30 minutes.

At the time of writing this post, a round-trip ticket costs about €30.00 per adult, with discounts for seniors and children and a family ticket option.

Check the most up-to-date information here.

You can just get the tickets at the ticket window of the lower valley station – we visited in the middle of August on a beautiful day, and there were only a few people in line.

What can you do at the top of the Vogel cable car?

Your Vogel experience starts with the ride up – it’s a short one, lasting just under 5 minutes – but what a thrill it is!

As you go up, you can admire amazing views of the lake below and at the same time check out the mountainside that seems to be right outside the cable car window.

When you exit the cable car you’ll find yourself on a steel grid deck, and that for me was already an adventure – you don’t realize how high you are till you look down!

Even if you only stepped out of the gondola and looked around from the viewing deck, the trip would already be worth it but there is a lot more to explore on the mountain.

1. The restaurant

You will pass through the “Viharnik” restaurant as you leave the main cable car building. It is more of a ski lodge bar but you can have a nice meal there.

Make sure to step outside on the large terrace and check out the views from there.

2. The photo spot

After you exit the restaurant, walk to the right and down the hill a little and you’ll see a pretty wooden heart-shaped photo prop – don’t miss it!

The pictures come out great, and the view of the Alps in the background is unbeatable!

3. The animals

Visit some animals – both real ones in their pens by the Ski Hotel and the ones carved out of wood! Perfect experience for families!

You may also see some cows if you take a walk to the Zadnji Vogel Meadow – read more below.

4. The playground

Enjoy a large play area for the kids (and fun-loving adults!)

5. The chairlift to Orlove Glave

This is one of the things we didn’t do – we simply didn’t allow enough time for our visit to this amazing spot.

The 4-person chairlift (the ticket is already included in your cable car ride fee) will take you 300 meters up to the Orlove Glave, where many hiking trails start, including the one to the summit of Mt. Vogel.

There is also a wishing bell at the upper station, right next to the chairlift – according to the locals, if you ring it, your wish will be granted!

Fun fact: if you like wishing bells and heart-shaped photo spots, make sure you visit the nearby Lake Bled – you’ll find both there as well!

6. Hike to Zadnji Vogel Planina (Zadnji Vogel Meadow)

It’s a 40-minute walk starting at the Vogel cable car station. Simply follow the path to the right, going past the  Merjasec Hut. You’ll see the signs to Zadnji Vogel.

At the end of this walk, you’ll arrive at a cheese hut with a huge pasture around it.

7. Paragliding

For thrill seekers, this area offers tandem paragliding flights.

We saw them in the air when we were walking along the path by Lake Bohinj.

How much time do I need on Vogel?

Well, you need more than we had!

We squeezed this ride into a very packed (OVER-packed) Lake Bohinj day and did not have enough time to explore everything we wanted.

Most visitors need 1.5 to 3 hours at Vogel.
Plan 1 to 2 hours for views, photos and short walks, or 2+ hours if you include the Orlove Glave chairlift ride and/or hiking. Add more time for longer trails or lunch at the restaurant.

Is the Vogel cable car worth it?

Yes! Even if you only have time for a short visit.

Visiting Mount Vogel by cable car is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to experience Slovenia’s mountain scenery.

Whether you want to explore, hike, or just soak in the stunning views without too much effort, this is the kind of place that makes it all possible.

As the Vogel slogan says: “Like a Fairy Tale”!

Can you resist these views?

Plus – you can easily combine it with a relaxing morning or afternoon at Lake Bohinj or visit as a day trip from Bled.

Where to stay near Vogel cable car

The closest place to stay in the Bohinj Campsite.

There are plenty of hotels and apartments around Lake Bohinj, with the most popular being Hotel Jezero and Hotel Bohinj.

You can also stay in Bled as it’s only a 45-minute drive from Bohinj.

That’s where we stayed – we traveled with a larger group, so we rented a great apartment in Bled and were super happy with it.

F.A.Q.

Is the ticket price high for what you get?

At first glance, €30 can feel a bit steep for a short cable car ride. However, when you consider that it takes you 1,000 meters up into the Julian Alps in under five minutes, with access to panoramic viewpoints, walking trails, a restaurant, and an included chairlift ride to Orlove Glave, it offers good value.

If you’re not planning a full-day mountain hike but still want big alpine views with minimal effort, the Vogel cable car is worth the price. That said, budget travelers or those already planning long hikes elsewhere in Slovenia may find it not worth it.

Is it worth going if visibility is bad?

Visibility plays a huge role in the experience.
On clear days, the views over Lake Bohinj and the surrounding peaks are spectacular. On cloudy or foggy days, those views can disappear almost entirely.
If the weather forecast shows low clouds or rain, it may be worth waiting or being flexible with your plans. Vogel is most rewarding in good weather, and the experience can feel underwhelming if you can’t see much beyond the viewpoint.

Helpful hint: Check the opening hours if the weather is windy – the cable car may have limited schedule or may close entirely for safety reasons.

Is it suitable if you don’t hike?

Yes, absolutely! You don’t need to hike at all to enjoy Vogel.
Even if you stay near the cable car station, you’ll find:
– Viewing decks with stunning scenery
– A restaurant with a panoramic terrace
– Photo spots and short, easy walks

Hiking is optional, not required, making this a great option for visitors who want scenic mountain views without physical exertion.

Is it suitable for people with a fear of heights?

This depends on how severe your fear of heights is.
The cable car itself is enclosed and very stable, which many people find reassuring. However, once you reach the top, there are open viewing areas and a metal grid platform where you can see straight down. For some, this can feel uncomfortable.
If heights make you very anxious, you may still enjoy the ride but might want to avoid lingering on the exposed viewing deck.

Is the Vogel cable car accessible to visitors with limited mobility?

The lower cable car station and gondola are generally accessible, and staff are available to assist with boarding. However, the terrain at the top is uneven, with gravel paths, slopes, and stairs in some areas.
While it is possible to enjoy the views near the station, exploring further or accessing certain paths may be challenging for wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility.

If accessibility is a major concern, it’s best to contact the Vogel cable car staff in advance to confirm current facilities and assistance options.

I hope I inspired you to ride the Vogel cable car and get a chance to view some truly incredible alpine scenery.
